The State Fair

This is an entry from September -- Mike wrote about a trip to the state fair.

We were at the Fair yesterday and got to see a cow give birth in the Miracle of Birth building. For those of you who haven’t been there, it’s really neat. They film it live and feed the video to about 10 TV screens around the building. Ben’s interest was so-so, but Maggie couldn’t take her eyes off the action. They eventually got to stand right in front at the fence along side the calf; they could practically touch it.

Maggie was adorable though because she kept reaching for the calf through the fence and you could see her saying something, probably “Come here baby,” and making smootching noises. Anyway, the point of my story: They were so amazed at this birth that they couldn’t stop asking where the baby came from, why was it in the momma cows belly, and how did the baby get there. Julie and I started to laugh because we just weren’t ready for “the talk.” After we mentioned a few things, they still weren’t happy with the answer and persited to ask, “But HOW did it get in the belly?” So, Julie likened it to some grass the kids grew earlier in the summer. She told them that a seed was in the momma cow and that it grew bigger and bigger until it was too big to fit in the mom and it came out. They seemed to understand that one. Too funny, yet too early to be giving “the talk.”
